Central Vermont Runners Club Donates $5000 to Flood Relief
(January 18, 2012)
The Central Vermont Runners Club (CVR) is pleased and excited to announce that they have donated $5,000.00 to various Irene Flood Relief agencies. CVR has donated $1000 to the Northfield Observances, $1000 to Dave’s Community Fitness, $2000 to Revitalizing Waterbury, and $1000 to the Waterbury Food Shelf, to aid residents in Duxbury.
CVR has been involved in Northfield, Waterbury and Duxbury for over 25 years sponsoring road races, and club members felt it was important to show their support in the continuing effort to aid those most in need in those communities hit so hard.
In Northfield the club has partnered with the Northfield Savings Bank to sponsor a 5K and 1 Mile race during the Labor Day Observances. CVR was saddened with the need to cancel such a popular event in 2011. Club President Norm Robinson stated, "Central Vermont Runners hopes in some small way that our donation will help the 2012 Observances to be bigger and better than ever, and we look forward to being part of the weekend festivities once again."
The 28th Annual Leaf Peepers Half Marathon and 5K Road Race was held in 2011 in spite of the devastation in Waterbury and Duxbury in large part due to the tremendous cooperation of state and local officials in both communities. "CVR has had a wonderful working relationship with the Harwood Boosters Club since our very first year and the club has donated approximately $100,000 to the Boosters over that time. More recently the volunteer firemen have volunteered at the races and we have been pleased to make a donation to them as well," said Robinson.
Because of these working relationships the Central Vermont Runners has felt a strong bond with residents in all 3 communities and are happy to help anyway they can. Learn more about CVR.

100-year-old sets record with marathon finish CBC News/Canada Oct. 16, 2011
Fauja Singh, 100, recently finished Toronto's waterfront marathon, securing a place in Guinness World Records as the oldest person to accomplish a run of that distance... or not, since Guinness World Records won't confirm the record because poor Mr. Singh was born before India began issuing birth records.

CVR Honors John Hackney with the '10 Spirit of the Club Award
At the January 2011 CVR Volunteer Recognition and CVR/ORS Awards Banquet, the club honored John Hackney the 2010 annual Spirit of the
Club Award. (Past winners include Nancy Rice, Priscilla Carr, Dave Kissner, Norm Robinson, Tim Noonan, Darragh Ellerson, and Donna
Smyers.) Below, see remarks from club president Andrea McLaughlin when she presented
the award to John.
"At the annual volunteer dinner, John Hackney was awarded the 2010 CVR Spirit of the Club Award. For the past 7 years, CVR has presented the award to a volunteer who over the years has been especially generous and effective in their volunteer efforts for the club.
John became a CVR member in 2000. After joining the club he volunteered to assist with the registration of Leaf Peepers Half Marathon & 5K. At that time registration was done all by hand. He has first-hand experience with the trials and tribulations of large races without the convenience of computers!
Since then he has become one of our most knowledgeable tech volunteers. He is a master of RunScore, the time machines, and more importantly, has assisted in the timing of the Northfield race. John also keeps track of all the race volunteers and the CVR Race Series points, and helps maintain the club's web site. John is an indispensable member of CVR. We all appreciate and thank John for his dedication to Central Vermont Runners."
